The light architect: essential for every type of space
Playing with light is a unique profession. An essential skill to fully do justice to spaces and to make them pleasant to work and live in. Our light architects are therefore a crucial factor in every Multiline project. They guarantee that the right lighting can be found in the right place, and that both the aesthetic look and the technical details are completely perfect. Their expertise is indispensable in every building project. Light architect Evy Peuters explains why.
Evy: “People consider light to be self-evident in a room. But finding the perfect lighting is not. And that is my role as a light architect: I develop light studies for the projects of our customers. Light studies in which I research what kind of lighting is suitable, how many light points are needed, which lux and UGR values must be met and which light fixtures match the design of the building and the individual spaces. If the right luminaire does not yet exist, we will develop and manufacture it ourselves.”
“Many aspects have to be taken into account, as there are countless factors that influence the lighting in a room. From the type of ceiling to the amount of daylight in the room, the colour of the walls to the function and furnishing of the room. And, obviously, the specific wishes or requirements of the client, the architect or the engineering office. Consider for example certain materials, waterproof luminaires, DALI light control, dimmability or the connection with the building management system. All these elements have been considered once I present my designs and calculations to our customer. Each project is in fact a custom project, no project is the same. ”
At the intersection between technology and aesthetics
“When I meet with the client, the architects, the engineering office, or several parties at the same time, I immediately ask them as many questions as possible. I try to gather as much information as possible in order to work out a complete first proposal. This usually consists of a light plan, a DWG plan in which we have drawn our lighting to scale, and a light calculation made via the DIALux program. Those two elements together form the light study. After that first proposal, a game of ping-pong always follows until the concept is fully defined. In the next step, everything is put into a tender text and delivered to the customer.”
“Right from the start, it is a matter of finding a good balance between the aesthetic and technical side of the story. The architect focuses on the first, the engineering office on the second. It is up to me to unite those two worlds. A good knowledge of materials is indispensable for this task. For example, a stretch ceiling requires different mounting brackets and systems than other types of ceilings. You need to know that in order to work out correct plans.”
All-in-one expertise
“Our method of working is unique thanks to the tons of knowledge we have in-house. Production processes, powder coating, light measurements, integrations, follow-up during installation… We do everything ourselves. This implies that we take into account all aspects of lighting from the very first step. And that we create designs and luminaires that perfectly meet the requirements of any space. That’s what gives me the most joy and fun: seeing how our luminaires are perfectly integrated and fully do justice to a room.”
