Architectural lighting for the Artevelde University of Applied Sciences
Architectural lighting contributes to the aesthetics of any space. You will notice this immediately when you walk into Campus Hoogpoort of the Artevelde University of Applied Sciences in Ghent. We were asked to develop a lighting concept that plays with symmetry and asymmetry in the various areas of the campus building.
The building
Campus Hoogpoort is located in an authentic residence, with a more recent outbuilding, in the centre of Ghent. The interior is predominantly modern, with some classic accents in the oldest parts of the building.
The building houses the general services of the university. As a result, many spaces have been set up as offices for staff and management. There are no classrooms specifically used for teaching, but there are conference rooms and meeting rooms that are also used by students.
The lighting concept
We came in touch with the customer Artevelde university through our dealer Corona from Bruges. They wanted architectural lighting that not only worked on a functional level, but also contributed to the aesthetics of the building. The lighting had to appeal to the target groups of the campus, both staff and students.
We developed a complete lighting concept with the necessary light calculations, quotations and plans. We used round luminaires in the stairwells and meeting rooms, since round shapes offer a more dynamic feel.
In the offices, we opted for linear light fixtures with a VDT louvre for a uniform light distribution and a high visual comfort (UGR<19).
Unique mikado configuration
In the meeting rooms, we arranged our light fixtures into a playful mikado configuration. The light lines hang at different heights above each other. Next to the aesthetic aspect, we also made sure to have an optimal light distribution in the entire room.
Architectural lighting adapted to the spaces
We gave the light fixtures their own paint colour that blends seamlessly with the environment and ceiling elements, such as the acoustic panels. Thanks to our own in-house paint shop, we were able to powder coat the luminaires in the desired colour.
We supplied surface-mounted luminaires as well as suspended luminaires, which were installed between the acoustic panels. The mikado configuration consists solely of suspended profiles.
The end result: modern lighting that radiates the desired dynamic look. A playful combination of various fixtures, which together contribute to the aesthetics of the building.
