Smart budget management for lighting at residential care centre H. Catharina
Lighting designer Evy faced the fascinating challenge of creating a lighting plan for residential care centre H. Catharina in Zonhoven: "For this new building, we based our work on an overall budget in order to develop a tailor-made plan spread over 3 construction phases". Evy explains how this plan came about.
Starting with a mock-up
“At the first site meeting, we listened attentively to the wishes of all parties and thought along with their story. After all, the interaction between main contractor, installer and architect is very important.“
“This project had some special requirements: emergency lighting, motion detectors and plinth lighting. At Multiline we always start from a functional basis and then determine what we can make more aesthetically pleasing. By working closely with everyone involved, we were able to give a clear indication of which luminaires were a perfect fit within the budget.”
“We proposed to start with a mock-up for one room. That way we get more insight into the specifics than when we only have a datasheet. Once all parties agree with the mock-up, we roll out the concept to the other rooms.”
Close involvement means smooth decision-making and fewer surprises
“As the installer relied fully on Multiline’s knowledge, we were able to add significant value with our lighting plans and calculations. Our goal is to facilitate the installer as much as possible. Thanks to our wide range of luminaires, we provided the installer with everything he required for this project: light lines in the corridors, downlights, three-phase spotlights on a track and outdoor lighting as well as basement lighting for the storage areas, large kitchens, changing rooms and sanitary areas for the staff.”
Being closely involved in the project allows us to move quickly if there are any changes. That way there are no surprises for the building owner. To guarantee good project follow-up, lighting designer Evy goes on site visits herself. “These site visits are included in the package. It allows me to see the techniques with my own eyes and look for solutions on site. This way, we make things as easy as possible for the installer.”
A good interaction
“The great thing about this project is that many aspects came together; the architect focused on the aesthetics, the main contractor considered the practicality and the installer had an eye on the technical side. All 118 rooms spread over seven floors are equipped with a DALI lighting management system, each luminaire has its own IP address and can be controlled remotely. In the Grand Café, the focus was on the decorative and aesthetic features. That is why the design of the interior designer was taken into account here.”

Lighting in Public Buildings: From Cost Item to Sustainable Investment
Lighting in public buildings is often assessed primarily on the basis of standards, budgets and specifications. This is understandable, but not sufficient. At Multiline, we approach lighting in public buildings as a strategic investment that must continue to perform reliably over the long term.
