Lighting architect Etienne Bindels: “When the lighting technology is right, the shape of the luminaire follows naturally”
Lighting architect Etienne Bindels is well known for his innovative approach to lighting and technology. He has an impressive portfolio of national and international projects. For a major part of his career, he has been working with Multiline to bring high-quality custom lighting solutions to his projects. Together we reflect on a collaboration that goes back more than a decade.

Etienne Bindels has a background in both interior architecture and electrical engineering. He has a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of production processes. Our working relationship began in the 1980s, when he learned about Multiline through his own manufacturing background in the Netherlands. The freedom and flexibility of the extrusion process at Multiline appeals to him the most. “You get a certain amount of freedom for every application. That opens up many possibilities in projects,” Etienne said. “This flexibility is crucial for projects in which customization and precision are crucial. Call it light down to the millimeter”.

500 meters of light lines
One of the larger projects where Etienne depended on the production capabilities of Multiline was the Gelderlandplein Shopping Center in Amsterdam. The goal was to mimic daylight with artificial lighting, which led to an impressive outcome. “Almost 500 meters of light lines, beautifully detailed and designed,” Etienne recalls. “This project was the result of a meticulous collaboration, defined by a shared passion for innovation and room for customization from the design phase to a new final product.”
“The flexibility and innovative nature of Multiline’s solutions have often proven their worth. Another example of this is Shopping Center Allee in Budapest, where we managed to combine aesthetic and functional lighting at a great height. Between the wooden slats you can find a Rekta 30 with narrow-beamed downlighters.
The billboards are illuminated by a Rekta 40 equipped with a linear lens. The whole thing looks good and meets the expectations of our client. You can see little stars twinkling and experience the light on the passage floor and the billboards above the stores,” Etienne says.
Technical expertise and creative freedom
Etienne particularly values Multiline’s technical expertise as well as its ability and willingness to take on complex projects. “From a manufacturer’s machinery, you recognize the level of in-house competence,” he states. “This technical skill, combined with an open attitude and flexibility, makes Multiline an ideal partner for challenging lighting projects and the kind of clients we work for.”
“Another enjoyable aspect as to why we love working with Multiline is the personal commitment of the business managers Monika and Klaus Rahne, the current generation running the family business. “Klaus is tremendously involved in every project. They manage everything very well together,” he notes. “This close cooperation with clients and architects ensures a smooth and efficient process, from concept to realization.”
A look at Etienne’s projects with Multiline
Etienne has worked closely with Multiline for a significant part of his career. This collaboration allows him to provide perfectly coordinated lighting that is not only functional, but also contributes to the aesthetics and atmosphere of the rooms. This approach results in innovative and tailor-made lighting solutions that have been applied in, among others, the following projects:
- Shopping mall Orangery
- Shopping mall Gelderlandplein
- Soed Voornermeer
- WC Sterrenburg Dordrecht
- WC Kroonenburg Arnhem
- Pivot Park Oss
- The Naaldwijk Gardens
- Groot Driene Hengelo
- Shopping Mall Budapest
Ambitious plans
Etienne Bindels has big plans for the future, including creating a special art object based on narrowcasting but in a miniature format. Although this project is still in development, he is optimistic about the outcome. “Anything is possible. The technology presents its own complex challenges, but it could be a new avenue to even cooler things.” he remarks.
